DO I EVEN NEED TUTORING?

You (or your child) may not need tutoring! Yes, I realise I'm running a business here, but I'd rather us both make the best use of our time... plus, if you're doing fine without a tutor, it leaves more time for me to support other students who really need it!

In saying that, I can help students really win their time management game, even if they don't need academic support. I have lots of tried and tested tips and tricks, with super-useful personalised templates students can use to ensure their success, even beyond their schooling years.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE?

  • I'm a registered teacher in Queensland. QCT registration: 875947.

  • I have a current Blue Card Exemption; renewal approved 8/12/17. All registered teachers and police officers must hold this exemption, equivalent to a valid Working with Children Check.

  • HTHS holds current Public Liability Insurance.

  • I have two degrees from the University of SA (2010): Bachelor of Education (Middle/Secondary) and Bachelor of Arts (Aboriginal Studies). I studied English, EALD, Sociology, Society and Environment, Indigenous Studies, and Visual Art at university.

  • I also have a Diploma of OSHC (Children's Services), and am currently completing a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations.​

  • I won an Indonesian Teaching Scholarship in 2011.

  • I am a trained Classroom Profiler in Queensland, specialising in Essential Skills for Classroom Management (behaviour management).

  • I have completed specialist Qld Government training in working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

WHAT DOES HTHS MEAN?

HTHS = How to High School. It's a long business name, so it's just easier to use this acronym!

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE?

  • I have worked in education for 11 years (seven years in South Australia, four in Queensland).

  • I have taught English Extension, English Communication, Functional English, English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD), English for ESL Learners, Aboriginal Studies and Study of Society across Years 10-12 in three different schools since 2011. I've also taught Years 6-10 English, History, Geography during this time, and Indonesian (Beginners) to Years Prep-12.

  • I was part of the Australian Curriculum consultation team for the Civics and Citizenship curriculum.

  • I have been invited to present my unique teaching resources on numerous occasions, at state conferences in both SA and QLD.

  • Throughout my teaching career, I have run extra tutoring and study groups for most of my classes, at the request of students and parents.

  • I've worked as a distance education teacher to Year 11 and 12 students across the world via teleconference, Skype, virtual classroom platforms. 

WHAT HAPPENS IN A COACHING [TUTORING] SESSION?

Before our first session, we'll make a time to meet (online or in person) so you and your child can get to know me a bit. At this meeting, I can assess where your child is at and together, we'll come up with a plan of action. We'll make a SMART goal and determine how many tutoring sessions you'll need, and the approach I'll need to take, to help your child achieve their goals. 
Our sessions will be structured, but flexible; I'll design a session plan according to your child's specific needs and preferred learning style. The sessions will revolve around the work your child is doing in class. I don't give students extra work unless you'd like me to - they've usually got enough already! I'll regularly check-in with both you and your child to ensure we're on the right track and that we're getting the most out of our time together.
Oh, and we'll have a bit of fun! Learning should always be enjoyable, and I'll do whatever I can to ensure that it is.

HOW DO WE GET STARTED?

  1. Fill in a CONTACT form so that I can get in touch at time that best suits you. We'll chat over the phone to determine what kind of support would best meet your family's needs.

  2. Download an INTRO PACK + ENROLMENT REQUEST FORM, complete it electronically, and email back to me. We'll then make a time to meet and confirm the tutoring package best suited to your needs.

  3. Read through How to High School's POLICIES. Please note our strict Payment and Cancellation Policy.

  4. Once this has been received, I will email you an invoice, and we'll set a time for our first tutoring session.  

  5. Email me any subject outlines or assessment tasks your child may have, as well as a copy of their timetable. I'll use these to prepare the session.

  6. At our first session, I'll help your child confirm a SMART goal, and a WEEKLY PLANNER, which will guide our future sessions. You are welcome to sit in on any sessions - whatever will make your child feel most comfortable and supported. 

  7. Your child achieves their first SMART goal, with the support of How to High School tutoring, family, and school staff! We're all in it together!

WHAT ARE SMART GOALS?

SMART is an acronym. The goals we make together will be:

Specific. This is the hardest bit, but I'll help you come up with the right angle.

Measurable. This is about what achieving your goal will look/sound/feel like. How will you know when you've reached it?

Achievable. The goal needs to be something you can actually achieve within a certain timeframe. 

Realistic. Your goal needs to be reachable. If it's not, you'll get overwhelmed and disheartened.

Time-bound. We'll set a definite time frame with steps to help you reflect, evaluate and stay on track.

Lastly, there should always be a reward for achieving your goal! Decide what you think is a worthy treat for your efforts.

PARENTS: HOW WILL I KNOW HOW MY CHILD IS PROGRESSING?

My theory is: the student is the boss. They are in charge of their learning. Parents, carers, teachers, tutors and school staff are all there to support the student. 
I ensure that everyone who needs to be, is kept in the loop through regular emails. You and your child decide who is included in this support network, and I play the role of facilitator, ensuring that we are all on track, doing our bit to help your child achieve their goals.
These emails include: a review of our last tutoring session, any points of concern, suggestions of specific ways each person within the support network can help, and points of action to be taken by the student by our next session.
Of course, parents/carers can contact me any time to discuss their child's progress further.

WHERE DO YOU HOLD YOUR TUTORING SESSIONS?

Wherever it suits you! I meet students in public, conducive learning spaces such as libraries, community centres, and sometimes a quiet cafe.
The tutoring location is negotiated with students and their parents/carers, depending on where they live, work, go to school, or proximity to public transport.

DO YOU OFFER PHONE/VIDEO TUTORING?  OR ONLY FACE-TO-FACE?

Yes! Face-to-face tutoring is great and can allow for more natural interaction and learning experiences.
However, we also offer Zoom, phone or Skype/FaceTime tutoring. For example, if you are unwell and can't get out of bed, but you're still stressed about the assignment due on Monday, you can have an online session and get it sorted for you!  We also offer online tutoring for students living outside of our TRAVEL ZONE (We're based in Coolum Beach).

CAN I EMAIL YOU MY ASSIGNMENTS TO LOOK OVER FOR ME?

Yes! Extra support is available for clients who purchase a 10-pack of tutoring sessions up-front.

I don't edit students' work, though. If I did this, you would most likely get top marks for spelling and grammar, but you will have learned nothing! However, I will give you the tools to perfect your own editing skills, so that you can achieve those top marks all on your own!

WHAT IS YOUR POLICY ON PAYMENT?

Payment for tutoring services is made prior to or at each session. I accept EFTPOS card payments, EFT online banking transfer, and cash payments. If you prefer, I can set up a direct-debit plan for a set period, such as a term or semester.

Generous discounts are available for clients who book packs of 5, 10, 20 or 30 sessions at a time.
